Join Greenpoint Eco Schools on Saturday, June 8th, to plant a native meadow in Manhattan Avenue Street End Park!

Show your love for Newtown Creek on World Oceans Day! Join Friends of MASE Park for a community stewardship event along the banks of Newtown Creek.

Help plant native grasses and wildflowers to create a new meadow in the park. Plus, march in a Sea Serpent Puppet Parade to celebrate the Creek's nature and wildlife!

Storytelling, facepainting, children’s crafts, refreshments, and more!

Final Tree Planting Ceremony

Greening Greenpoint is celebrating the planting of the final tree of the project!  

Join us and your fellow Greenpointers in celebrating the project by planting a Swamp White Oak at the Transmitter Park waterfront by hand!

The tree will be planted on the Kent St. side of the lawn by the water and the event will begin at 6:00 PM with the tree planting ceremony! 

After the ceremony stick around to enjoy refreshments and take some bulbs with you to plant at home in a Greening Greenpoint tote bag!

Join Greening Greenpoint for Jane’s Walk 2019

We’ll be joined by Maya Robinson of Rooted Things Apothecary for a guided tree walk in McCarren Park focusing on the medicinal properties of Greenpoint’s trees

We will take a closer look at the street trees we walk by every day in our neighborhood and explore their amazing healing properties and the medicines that can be made from them.

We will also learn to ground ourselves with a tree meditation

The walk will run twice:

    We'll meet on the Lorimer St. side of 332 Driggs Avenue (at the corner of Driggs Ave. and Lorimer St.by Bernie's Restaurant)

Maya Robinson is a clinical herbalist and energy worker who grew up in Japan. She is the owner of Rooted Things Apothecary, providing herbal consultation and high quality artisanal flower waters, as well as Co-Founder of Plant-Matters, a digital publication about all things plants.

Join Greening Greenpoint and Eckford Street Studio to create nature prints using several techniques and learn about Greenpoint’s street trees!

The event will begin with a brief tree care overview from Greening Greenpoint, followed by nature printmaking led by Eckford Street Studio.

You’ll use materials sourced from the urban forest to make gelatin plate monotypes and collagraph prints, illustrating the creative possibilities of making art with nature. See photos below for examples!

Fun for the whole family, both printmaking techniques are suitable for all ages!

  • Retrofitting NYC to be more self reliant and a healthier environment to live in

  • Cleaning indoor air with plants

  • Ways to clean up contaminated sites

  • Creating beautiful natural areas to connect people with healthy ecosystems in the midst of the city landscape

  • Gardening in the city with Permaculture design

  • Site analysis and design techniques for rooftop farms, city gardens and business models

  • Working with bees, chickens and other micro-livestock in urban settings

    You will learn how to design your life and your livelihood to be a part of creating a better and healthier world for all

Learn More About Andrew Faust:

Andrew is the Founder and Director of the Center For Bioregional Living, a hands-on educational campus for students and clients in Ellenville, NY. He is one of the premier Permaculture teachers and designers in North America, with over two decades of experience in the field. His passionate and mind expanding talks and curriculum have motivated teachers and students since his decade long career as a high school teacher at Upattina's Open Community High School in Glenmoore, PA. Faust moved to Brooklyn in 2007 and has been applying his knowledge to the urban landscape. Since then, Faust has been inspiring film makers with the message of Permaculture culminating in the film Inhabit and a life changing Permaculture Design Certification course that has over 500 graduates. Faust received a dual diploma in Design and Education from Permaculture Institute of North America in 2016. Andrew and Adriana Magaña with their daughter Juniper run the Center for Bioregional Living.

Come out on Saturday, January 12th and help spread mulch generated during MulchFest around trees in McCarren Park!  You can bring your holiday tree to be recycled into wood chips and take a bag of mulch home with you!  

Citizen Pruners will also have the opportunity to prune trees in McCarren!

Tools, gloves, and hot beverages will be provided!

Meet-up will be on the corner of Lorimer St. and Driggs Ave. at 10 a.m.

Join Greening Greenpoint, Brooklyn Public Library, and local historian Geoff Cobb for an environmental history of Greenpoint! 

We’ll begin with the walking tour at the corner of Franklin and Calyer St. at 11 AM. The walk will end at Bushwick Inlet Park (86 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11249) North 9th street entrance, around 12 PM and will be followed by a presentation by Mr. Cobb and scanning event with Brooklyn Public Library.

Brooklyn Public Library’s Greenpoint Oral History and Community Scanning Project is dedicated to documenting and preserving the environmental history of Greenpoint, and you can help by contributing an item to the project. BPL will scan items such as documents, photographs, ephemera and mementos. We’re also happy to have digital items such as JPGs, DOCs and PDFs.

Greenpoint Oral History and Community Scanning Project at Bushwick Inlet Park: Pests in Greenpoint

Join the Greenpoint Oral History and Community Scanning Project at the Bushwick Inlet Park building, 86 Kent Avenue, for a talk with Greening Greenpoint’s Bill Schmidt where he’ll discuss the reign and destruction of the Asian Longhorn Beetle in Greenpoint and the new scourge of our trees, the Emerald Ash Borer

Following the talk we will hold a community scanning event to document the environmental history of Greenpoint.  What will we scan? Documents, photographs, ephemera, mementos - anything we can digitize - What do you have in your personal collection that tells of the story of Greenpoint’s environment?  

By contributing materials you are choosing how Greenpoint’s environmental history will represented and remembered.

This will be one of six events held by Brooklyn Public Library throughout the next year to collect the memories of Greenpoint residents to ensure Greenpoint’s environmental history is remembered

Join Greening Greenpoint for a guided walk through Greenpoint’s history with a special focus on the former Bushwick Creek  

The walk will be led by Greenpoint historian Geoffrey Cobb, author of “Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Forgotten Past” and “The King of Greenpoint”.  

Geoffrey will discuss the impact of Bushwick Creek on Greenpoint’s early development and point out its lasting impacts on the landscape.  

We’ll meet at the northwest corner of Franklin St. and Calyer St. and end at the Parks Department building at 86 Kent Avenue with a short visual presentation and refreshments.

One lucky participant of each walk will take home a copy of "Greenpoint Brooklyn's Forgotten Past"!

We will run the walk twice, once beginning at 11 AM and again at 1 PM, sign up using the links below!

Suitable for all ages, Greenpoint Eco Schools' Sustainability Coaches will be present to help with activities for even the youngest tree stewards!

The Summit will include insights from a resident speaker, a panel discussion with representatives from NYC Parks, Partnerships for Parks, and Citizens Committee on available resources, and time to enjoy refreshments and connect with other local stewards and organizations!

Pick up a raffle ticket at the door and you'll be entered into a raffle to win a tree care kit or a copy of "The Living Forest"!  We'll also be giving away bulbs, so you can take some home to plant on your block!
