Tree Work Request Form
Greening Greenpoint’s Tree Work Request Form was open from June 1 to December 1, 2018. Tree work is ongoing and will continue into spring 2019. Keep an eye out for perennials planted in over 70 tree beds in Greenpoint during fall 2018!
If you requested any of the types of tree work noted below, we will be reaching out with more information in early spring, thanks again for helping us keep Greenpoint green!
NEW TREE PLANTING
We are able to plant new trees in existing, empty tree beds, replace dead trees, and cut new tree beds in the concrete sidewalk. The tree location must be on a city sidewalk in the public right-of-way. Please refer to the Park’s Department Planting Process for more in-depth information on how trees are planted.
PERENNIAL AND BULB PLANTING
Adding bulbs and perennials to your tree bed lets people know that the tree is cared for and adds aesthetic value to the block. Planting also helps discourage people from walking through the tree bed which compacts the soil and can eventually suffocate the tree roots.
TREE BED EXPANSION
Many trees in Greenpoint were historically planted in very small tree beds. This can be problematic for a number of reasons: once a tree begins to grow, if it does not have adequate space the roots can push up the surrounding concrete, creating a tripping hazard. By increasing the soil volume, we create a healthier growing environment and enable your tree to grow to its fullest potential.
BLOCK REMOVAL
Cobble stone, Belgian block, and even concrete blocks installed in tree beds long ago can create tripping hazards, inhibit tree growth, and are often an eyesore. Removing the blocks and adding soil and mulch to the tree bed provides a better growing environment for the tree and a more pleasing streetscape.
The form will close on December 1st, 2018. Requests made after September 1st will be included in spring 2019 work.
Block removal and tree bed expansion work has to be completed before bulb and perennial planting when both are requested for a site, this may affect timing of work.
